It\u2019s the combination of several communities with different behaviours, traditions and religious ideologies, living in perfect communion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sincerely, I could live in this paradise, and I rarely, (or never, to be honest) say that! The legend says he spotted a lion, which in Sanskrit is named singha and therefore the name of the country, <em>Singapore \u2013 City of the Lion<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But the crucial point takes us a bit forward in history, into the XIX century, when the Engilsh Sir Thomas Stanford Raffles established in the Island with commercial purposes. Which seems to have been the best decision possible to the people! Once from there on, it had a severe increase in terms of richness and quickly became one of the four Asian Tigers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The economy is essentially dependent of industry and services and the country is world leader in several areas. It\u2019s the fourth main business centre in the world, the second largest casino market and the third biggest oil refinery centre. Its port is one of the five busiest in the world (it\u2019s amazing to see all the boats around the island while flying over Singapore).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And like that\u2019s not enough, it\u2019s home of the largest number of millionaire families in dollars per capita, seems like 1 in every 10 inhabitants has more than a million Singapore dollars!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The World Bank considers it the best place in the world to do business.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you still haven\u2019t got it: Singapore is one of the richest and agitated countries in the planet!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/TheSouthBeach-19.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10001\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/TheSouthBeach-19.jpg\" alt=\"TheSouthBeach - 19\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/TheSouthBeach-19.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/TheSouthBeach-19-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #999999;\"><em>The business center of Singapore<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Seems like all this is due to, mainly, Lee Kuan Yew, of Chinese ancestry and socialist philosophy, considered the \u201cfather\u201d of Singapore, elected prime minister during thirty years, succeeded by his son, Lee Hsien Loong, still in power.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">By now you\u2019re thinking \u2013 \u201c<em>hmm another dictatorship<\/em>!\u201d \u2013 but, you\u2019re wrong, there are several parties, elections and a government that developed a country instead of enrichening themselves. Something quite patent when you listen to some locals speak about their politicians and their work (wish I could say the same\u2026).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nowadays, Singapore has a population of over 5 million, from several ethnicities. The main three are the Chinese, Malaysian and Indian. In terms of religion, there\u2019s a bit of everything. Which makes Buddhist (over 50% of the population), Muslim and Christian (around 15%) and Hindu (around 4%) temples live side by side. Living side by side doesn\u2019t always mean in communion, but here it is, and life is so, so good!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Singapura-81-1.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-23862 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Singapura-81-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Singapura-81-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Singapura-81-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Singapura-81-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Singapura-81-1-450x300.jpg 450w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Singapura-81-1-225x150.jpg 225w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Singapura-81-1-900x600.jpg 900w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Singapura-81-1-20x13.jpg 20w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Singapura-81-1-144x96.jpg 144w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Singapura-81-1.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #999999;\"><em>Hindu Temple &#8211;\u00a0Sri Veeramakaliamman<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Deep down, there\u2019s an immense respect for everybody\u2019s cultural differences, of course there\u2019s also a rule formatted system, quite defined and rigid (very rigid), but the truth is it works to perfection, and so I say, and I\u2019ll repeat it quite a lot, Singapore is quite perfect!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>What you need to know when travelling to Singapore:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong>Official language<\/strong>: English<\/li>\n<li><strong>Currency<\/strong>: Singapore Dollar (1EUR = 1, 52683 SGD)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Climate<\/strong>: quite warm during the entire year (25 to 35\u00baC, the rainiest periods are from November to January\/February \u2013 we went in the end of February and it went well, we had two hours of rain during an afternoon).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Vaccination<\/strong>: Not needed (for the Portuguese)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Passport<\/strong>: As usual is mandatory the presentation of a passport with 6-month validity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Visa<\/strong>: the majority of the countries don\u2019t need a Visa to enter Singapore (Portugal and Brazil included), unless you intend to stay in the country for more than 90 days.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, Brazilian must present a valid certificate for Yellow Fever. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ica.gov.sg\/page.aspx?pageid=96&amp;secid=94\">Know more<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong>How to get there<\/strong>: We flew, as usual, with <a href=\"www.emirates.com\">Emirates<\/a> \u2013 Porto-Lisbon (TAP); Lisbon-Dubai; Dubai-Singapore (Changi Airport) \u2013 in a total of 17h of flight, besides scales.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It\u2019s easy to find trips from every major city, once all the main companies fly to Singapore. From Brazil you easily get trips with Emirates, United and Etihad.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong>Time zone<\/strong>: + 8h (in comparison with Portugal)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Transportation<\/strong>: Taxis aren\u2019t expensive and take you everywhere, with taximeter, invoice and no scams, to change a bit from the usual panorama. The subway network is also quite organized and easy to use, assuring quick access to the different areas to visit, Uber is also available, with a great service and a bigger number of services (you can even call a taxi on the APP).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Having in account the amount of population, Singapore doesn\u2019t have the usual (and infernal) traffic of the Asian metropolises. Because government defined an excellent public transport networks and increased the prices of cars and licenses (that can cost as much or more that the car you want to buy).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Rules to take in account (really): It\u2019s forbidden to chew gum, it\u2019s not for sale and you can\u2019t enter the country with it; it\u2019s forbidden to spit on the floor; forbidden to cross outside the zebra crossing; public urination is also forbidden, as well as tossing garbage to the ground; forbidden to enter a casino under 21 years of age; the use of drugs is also forbidden, moreover it\u2019s punished with death penalty(!); it\u2019s also advisable to avoid public affection demonstrations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It may seem a bit too much, but it\u2019s not, because it works, the streets are super clean, the city is organized to perfection and it\u2019s one of the best places in the world to live in! So it\u2019s working!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">You can always break the rules if you want to, but enable to suffer the consequences, like big fines, prison or even lashings! And no need to ask for help to your country! Singapore, despite that cosmopolitan look, is an authentic garden, green is one of the dominating colours and rivals with the metal from skyscrapers. All this because the visionary Lee Kuan Yew wanted to develop Singapore as a green city that would cut the effects of a concrete jungle.
