{"id":14014,"date":"2016-01-08T15:38:00","date_gmt":"2016-01-08T15:38:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/en\/?p=1571"},"modified":"2016-01-08T15:38:00","modified_gmt":"2016-01-08T15:38:00","slug":"budapestday-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/en\/budapestday-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Visiting Budapest in 3 Days \u2013 Day 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-74.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9621\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-74.jpg\" alt=\"Budapeste - 74\" width=\"540\" height=\"827\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-74.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-74-195x300.jpg 195w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #999999;\">\u00a0The Parliament seen from the Buda Castle\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The last of three cities from a wonderful trip to Central Europe.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">So we met Budapest, in the evening of an Autumn day, with bright colors and mystical landscapes, constrasting with the cosmopolitan side of the city, and\u00a0we soon fell in love.<br \/>\nBudapest is exactly that, a place where we find a medieval castle, a gothic church, a Baroque building, a hidden alley, a luxurious avenue, a square filled with bars and<em> caf\u00e9s<\/em>, where we find a bit of everything and where the past, present and future live in harmony!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It&#8217;s the city of two cities, the mysterious and magical Buda city, and the agitated, business city of Pest.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">An excellent way to finish this travel through three dstinct cities, with so much history in common.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-26m.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9574\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-26m.jpg\" alt=\"Budapeste - 26m\" width=\"540\" height=\"361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-26m.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-26m-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a>History of Budapest<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Budapest supposedly began in the I century BC, when it was occupied by the romans, who stayed there for centuries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 826 was the time for the\u00a0Magyars tribes to install themselves in the region.<br \/>\nIn 1000, the famous King Stephen is coronated and declares the country as a Christian State.<br \/>\nFollowed the Mongolian invasions during the XIII century.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Later, between 1458-90 the city becomes one of the main capitals of the European Renaissance, during the reign of \u00a0<em>M\u00e1ty\u00e1s<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-27.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9575\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-27.jpg\" alt=\"Budapeste - 27\" width=\"540\" height=\"808\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-27.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-27-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #999999;\">Saint Stephen&#8217;s Cathedral\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Already in the XVI century, the Turkish invaded the city and there stayed for 150 years, until 1686 when the city met freedom by the hands of an European army ally. The Habsburgs then started to control Hungary (remember them from the history of Vienna, right?! <a title=\"Visiting Vienna in 3 Days \u2013 Day 1\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/en\/vienna-day1\/\">See<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the following centuries came the Reform Era, during which several public institutions were created and the city evolved positively.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Between 1848-49 took place the Independence War, while the country tried to become free from the Austrian Empire, without success, until in 1867 an agreement was made to establish a double monarchy between Austria and Hungary.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1918, after the World War I, the empires dissociate.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-62.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9609\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-62.jpg\" alt=\"Budapeste - 62\" width=\"540\" height=\"361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-62.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-62-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a>Later, the Russians with helped to free the country from the Nazi Germany of the World War II, and the country fell in a Communist period for around 45 years, until in 1989 free elections were announced.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With this brief history summary we are able to realize that Budapest has a lot of architecture from Renaissance, there&#8217;s art in every corner, it also has a very noticeable Imperial influence, from the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, it also has, in some areas, a darker face, influence of the communism years, but above all, it clearly has, a very bohemian culture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-108.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9655\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-108.jpg\" alt=\"Budapeste - 108\" width=\"540\" height=\"361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-108.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-108-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a>And so, after traveling a bit through history, let&#8217;s travel around the city!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Similarly to the other cities, <a title=\"Visiting Prague in 3 Days \u2013 Day 1\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/en\/prague1\/\">Prague<\/a> and <a title=\"Visiting Vienna in 3 Days \u2013 Day 1\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/en\/vienna-day1\/\">Vienna<\/a>, I elaborated a three day guide, we didn&#8217;t do everything we wanted to, but it was perfectly enough to get to know the essence of Budapest and wanting to return in the future.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It&#8217;s a very cost accessible city, the visiting places and transportation are quite cheaper than other European cities (coming from Vienna also makes everything seem cheaper!).<br \/>\nThe city can easily be divided in five areas, we didn&#8217;t go to all of them, but we were in three, so I&#8217;ll tell you about what we did in three days and what I suggest in case you have more time, five days seem enough to me.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-10.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9561\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-10.jpg\" alt=\"Budapeste - 10\" width=\"540\" height=\"361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-10.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-10-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #999999;\">\u00a0View over the Gell\u00e9rt Hotel, famous for its thermal baths\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The city can be divided into the following five areas:<br \/>\n<strong>&#8211; Castle District \u2013 Buda<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&#8211; Lip\u00f3tvaros (Parliament) \u2013 Pest<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&#8211; Belv\u00e1ros \u2013 Pest<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&#8211; Gell\u00e9rt-Hegy and R\u00f3zsadomb \u2013 Buda<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&#8211; Oktogon and V\u00e1rosliget \u2013 Pest<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We only visited the first three, so I&#8217;ll mostly talk about those.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-25.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9573\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-25.jpg\" alt=\"Budapeste - 25\" width=\"540\" height=\"361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-25.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-25-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a>1st DAY<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>&#8211; Belv\u00e1ros<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We arrived late in the city, by train (travel time: 4h) from Vienna, the station building promised a very pretty and agitated city. The sun was up, despite the cold, and we went to the hotel (<a title=\"InterContinental Budapest\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/en\/intercontinental-budapest\/\">see<\/a>) to leave the bags and go out to discover the city.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Once it was late, we chose to walk around the nearest area of the hotel,\u00a0<em>Belv\u00e1ros<\/em>, and leave the other places for the next days.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-3.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9554\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-3.jpg\" alt=\"Budapeste - 3\" width=\"540\" height=\"361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-3.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-3-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #999999;\"><em>Vorosmarty t\u00e9r Square<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In\u00a0<em>Belv\u00e1ros<\/em>\u00a0there are some places where you can visit the interior or simple choose to walk around and enjoy the city as a local, not a tourist, and that&#8217;s what we did. Wandering around without a specific destination, discovering a lively city, with a wonderful bohemian touch, and a surprise in each corner.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-41.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9588\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-41.jpg\" alt=\"Budapeste - 41\" width=\"540\" height=\"825\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-41.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-41-196x300.jpg 196w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #999999;\"><em>V\u00e1ci utca<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We continued our trip (walking, of course) by the most famous street in the city, <em>V\u00e1ci utca<\/em>. This street is filled with restaurants, bars, <em>caf\u00e9s<\/em>, clothing, jewelry and \u00a0book stores, among many other things.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The beautiful terraces pile up on top of each other and everywhere we look there&#8217;s an immensity of people.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you wish to stop for a coffee or to eat something, the bars and <em>caf\u00e9s\u00a0<\/em>are a great option, not the restaurants, once here they&#8217;re much more expensive than in other areas of the city, and they&#8217;ve got nothing of tradtitonal, the true tourist hunting places (this doesn&#8217;t mean that there can&#8217;t be a good one, but in general, that&#8217;s not what happens, unfortunately), however, to better enjoy this area, I advise you to have a coffee in one of the oldest and most famous <em>caf\u00e9s<\/em> in the city.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-2.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9553\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-2.jpg\" alt=\"Budapeste - 2\" width=\"540\" height=\"361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-2.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #999999;\"><em>Gerbeau<\/em><em>d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For me, the most interesting one is probably the <em>Gerbeaud<\/em>, at the\u00a0<em>Vorosmarty t\u00e9r\u00a0<\/em>square, which can be considered the north end of\u00a0<em>V\u00e1ci utca<\/em>. This square is also, by itself, a beautiful place, with a bohemian and imperial environment, and in December it transformes into a Christmas Market.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This avenue, which in the medieval period crossed Pest from one end to the other, has been a place to walk around and shop from the beginning of the \u00a0XVIII century, reaching its pinnacle in the end of the XIX century, beginning of the XX century.<br \/>\nNowadays, it&#8217;s still a landmark in the city, and one of the most visited areas by tourists and also by locals for their dates and usual meetings; for shopping, currently the best stores are in the <em>Andr\u00e1ssy Avenue<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-4.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9555\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-4.jpg\" alt=\"Budapeste - 4\" width=\"540\" height=\"361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-4.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-4-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #999999;\"><em>Interior of the V\u00e1ci uca church<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the Belv\u00e1ros area there are three important places to visit (we opted to not enter any of the museums because we didn&#8217;t have the time that day):<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The\u00a0<em>Nagy Zsinag\u00f3ga<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Zsid\u00f3 M\u00fazeum<\/em>\u00a0or Great Synagogue is the second largest in the world (the biggest is in New York City) and the Jewish Museum next to it, portrays the holocaust in Hungary.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-24.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9572\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-24.jpg\" alt=\"Budapeste - 24\" width=\"540\" height=\"361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-24.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-24-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #999999;\"><em>The Great Synagogue<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Great Synagogue is an imposing, beautiful and eclectic building, on its back is located a memorial park where are buried many of the Jews who died when this region of the city became a guetto.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As to the Jewish Musuem, it shares with the world, the holocaust tragedy, with photographs from that period.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9571 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-23.jpg\" alt=\"Budapeste - 23\" width=\"540\" height=\"361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-23.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-23-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><em><span style=\"color: #999999;\">Hungarian National Museum<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The\u00a0<em>Magyar Nemzeti M\u00fazeum<\/em>\u00a0or Hunagrian National Museum is the largest in the country and home of one of the most important pieces to the people, the Coronation Mantle of King Stephen I.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Installed in a neoclassical colossus, the museum was born from the initiative of the great reformist of the city,\u00a0<em>Ferenc Sz\u00e9ch\u00e9nyi<\/em>, in 1847 by the hands of the architect\u00a0<em>Mih\u00e1ly<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Here you&#8217;ll find a wide collection of prints, manuscripts, books, maps, medieval stone sculptures, Roman lapidary and all the history from the beginnng of the city to the freedom from communism.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-22.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9570\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-22.jpg\" alt=\"Budapeste - 21\" width=\"540\" height=\"361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-21.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Budapeste-21-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a>Most important thing: feel yourselves stepping in history, because it was in the stairs of this building (exterior staircase) that one of the most significant moments of the country took place, the national anthem by the words of the poet\u00a0<em>S\u00e1ndor Petofi <\/em>exhorting the Hungarians to free themselves from the Habsburgs. Maybe one of the main causes of the Independence War of 1848-49, which the Habsburgs would win.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The\u00a0<em>Iparmuv\u00e9szeti M\u00fazeum<\/em>, or Museum of Applied Arts, is another place of interest in the region of\u00a0<em>Belv\u00e1ros<\/em>\u00a0and it&#8217;s worthy for itself, independently of its collections, being a perfect example of the\u00a0Secessionist architecture, with Islamic and Hindu features, and several oriental themes. Constructed in the end of the XIX century, it is a beautiful\u00a0<em>art noveau<\/em>\u00a0building, that is more fascinating on the outside, than the inside.
