{"id":13983,"date":"2015-08-02T17:20:23","date_gmt":"2015-08-02T17:20:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/en\/?p=1291"},"modified":"2019-03-21T10:46:09","modified_gmt":"2019-03-21T10:46:09","slug":"lisbon-a-weekend-downtown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/en\/lisbon-a-weekend-downtown\/","title":{"rendered":"Lisbon &#8211; A Weekend Downtown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-60.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8188\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-60.jpg\" alt=\"Lisboa2015 - 60\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-60.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-60-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a>Travelling is what gives me the most pleasure in life, for sure (eating and drinking as well, of course), but that doesn\u2019t always imply leaving Portugal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Our country is perfect (yes, I know I\u2019m suspicious), it has a bit of everything, beach, river, mountain, countryside, history, gastronomy, nice people, safety and much, much more, the truth is wandering around my country gives me an enormous pleasure!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">So, this time we are \u201ctravelling\u201d to the capital for a weekend.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-35.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8166\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-35.jpg\" alt=\"Lisboa2015 - 35\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-35.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-35-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #999999;\">The view from St. George&#8217;s Castle<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A few weeks ago we went to Lisbon to try two novelties in the Hotel business, the magnificent <em><strong>PortoBay Liberdade<\/strong><\/em> (<a title=\"PortoBay Liberdade\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/en\/portobay-liberdade\/\">see<\/a>) and the astonishing <em><strong>Pousada de Lisboa<\/strong><\/em> (<a title=\"Pousada de Lisboa\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/en\/pousada-de-lisboa\/\">see<\/a>), an opportunity that also allowed us to enjoy one of our favorite cities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Time was short, and of work (yes, because It doesn\u2019t look like it, but this is not just living the good life!) and so we chose to walk around downtown.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-55.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8183\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-55.jpg\" alt=\"Lisboa2015 - 55\" width=\"540\" height=\"816\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-55.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-55-198x300.jpg 198w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #999999;\"><em>The vision of\u00a0Marqu\u00eas de Pombal, patent\u00a0in the Arco da Rua Augusta (Lisbon\u2019s Triumphal Arch)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Lisbon has an unparalleled history and culture, it went through Neolithic, Roman and Muslim periods and it was reconquered in the XII century, under the command of Afonso Henriques, being since then the political, financial and cultural center of the country. After the earthquake of 1755, the vision of Marqu\u00eas de Pombal brought the glamour and elegance of the great European cities to Lisbon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Portobay-11m.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7940\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Portobay-11m.jpg\" alt=\"Portobay - 11m\" width=\"540\" height=\"771\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Portobay-11m.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Portobay-11m-210x300.jpg 210w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On the day of our arrival it was already late so we stayed at\u00a0<em>PortoBay<\/em>, relaxing in the Jacuzzi of <em>Deck7<\/em> and later having dinner at<em> Bistr\u00f44<\/em> (and what a dinner! \u2013 <a title=\"Bistr\u00f44\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/en\/bistro4\/\">see<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After a well slept night, recharged energies and a breakfast of Kings, it was time to go through the city and discover its essence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-1-.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8135\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-1-.jpg\" alt=\"Lisboa2015 - 1\" width=\"540\" height=\"810\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-1-.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-1--200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #999999;\"><em>Pr\u00edncipe Real<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Those who already know the blog know that we are experts in walking for hours and hours simply enjoying everything around us, whether it is a garden, a monument, a classic building or a more contemporary one, a simple store, a pastry shop, a park, an alley or simply unwinding the route of those with whom we cross.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We love consuming the life each place is able to transmit and that is the most important and enriching of travelling.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-2.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8136\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-2.jpg\" alt=\"Lisboa2015 - 2\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-2.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #999999;\"><em>Pr\u00edncipe Real<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We started in the renewed and nowadays cosmopolitan area of <em>Pr\u00edncipe Real<\/em>, well located in the heart of Lisbon, next to the Botanic Garden, the <em>Bairro Alto<\/em> and just a few minutes walking from <em>Chiado<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This place was once stage for a pig market and the <em>Amoreiras<\/em> market. Later it suffered a different organization, becoming a square and also a garden; which is nowadays the <em>Fran\u00e7a Borges<\/em> Garden.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The garden, with 20 meters of diameter (gorgeous), was conceived according to the romantic English style, and several species of arboreal stand out, with highlight to the enormous<em> Cedro-do-Bu\u00e7aco<\/em> (a cedar).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-3.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8137\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-3.jpg\" alt=\"Lisboa2015 - 3\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-3.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-3-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nIn the center of the square there\u2019s a lake surrounded by roses, under which lodges the <em>Reservat\u00f3rio da Patriarcal<\/em>, a part of the Water Museum.<\/p>\n<p>There are also some kiosks, some with a cafeteria service, where we can enjoy the agitated life of Lisbon in a brake moment of ours!<\/p>\n<p>Around the garden we can observe palaces from the XIX century, like the <em>Palacete Ribeiro da Cunha<\/em>, of neo-Arabic style. On Saturdays you can\u2019t miss the Bio Market of <em>Pr\u00edncipe Real<\/em> where many famous chefs supply themselves.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-4.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8138\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-4.jpg\" alt=\"Lisboa2015 - 4\" width=\"540\" height=\"704\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-4.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-4-230x300.jpg 230w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a>Very close to this garden, moreover, once upon a time\u00a0fed by the <em>Reservat\u00f3rio da Patriarcal<\/em>, we find one of the places that assures a breathtaking view over Lisbon, the viewpoint of<em>\u00a0S\u00e3o Pedro de Alc\u00e2ntara<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This beautiful location is inserted in a garden with a small lake, with a landscape magnificence that transports us far away. Here we can see the east of the city, and the south margin of Tejo.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-8m.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8141\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-8m.jpg\" alt=\"Lisboa2015 - 8m\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-8m.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-8m-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nRight next to the viewpoint we have the mythical <em>Cal\u00e7ada da Gl\u00f3ria<\/em>, connecting the <em>Bairro Alto<\/em> to the <em>Pra\u00e7a dos Restauradores<\/em> through its elevator, which is a delight to any photographic lens!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Here were held, a century ago, cycling events, the so called <em>Subida \u00e0 Gl\u00f3ria<\/em>, which was now resumed in 2013.<br \/>\nThis wonderful elevator work dates back from 1885, by Raoul Ponsard, a Portuguese engineer of French origin, responsible for many other projects of the same gender. Once, this crossing was made at candlelight, but later in 1915 it became electric.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-10m.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8143\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-10m.jpg\" alt=\"Lisboa2015 - 10m\" width=\"540\" height=\"810\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-10m.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-10m-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We thought of descending\u00a0with the lift but since we wanted to grab lunch in the area of<em> Pr\u00edncipe Real<\/em> we stayed up here and went walking through the streets and alleys of <em>Bairro Alto<\/em>, which, by the way, are much calmer during the day. Although I love the frantic evenings of this neighborhood, it is also nice to discover it during the day and get to know its true origins and people.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-12.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8145\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-12.jpg\" alt=\"Lisboa2015 - 12\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-12.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-12-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #999999;\">Street Art at Bairro Alto<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Without destination we discovered each narrow alley, with different bars and restaurants, with stores and secular buildings and also trying to imagine what the nights would be like in that place back in the XVI century.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/lisboa2015-1xx.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8215\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/lisboa2015-1xx.jpg\" alt=\"lisboa2015- - 1xx\" width=\"540\" height=\"540\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/lisboa2015-1xx.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/lisboa2015-1xx-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/lisboa2015-1xx-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a>Certainly as fun as nowadays, moreover, everything points to this being a place of prostitution, but also, already in the XX century, a place of the bohemian Lisbon, attended by artists, writers and journalists, besides it was the headquarters of many newspapers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/A-Cevicheria-1.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8016\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/A-Cevicheria-1.jpg\" alt=\"A Cevicheria - 1\" width=\"540\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/A-Cevicheria-1.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/A-Cevicheria-1-300x185.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a>Already very tired and hungry (something that insists on happening to me all day long, unfortunately!), we went back to<em> Pr\u00edncipe Real<\/em> for a visit to the restaurant of the young and brilliant Chef Kiko Martins, <strong><em>A Cevicheria<\/em><\/strong>, we rested and delighted ourselves with a lunch that stayed in our memories (<a title=\"A Cevicheria\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/en\/a-cevicheria\/\">see<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ready to continue and with a less cultural and futile desire, we decided to go shopping, and what better place to do it?!<br \/>\nI know, there must be numerous, but we chose the huge and famous Avenida da Liberdade, to my regret Porto is missing an avenue like this, reuniting all the great brands, but of course Porto has other enchantments (I don\u2019t want a war in the comments between Lisbon and Porto!).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After the earthquake in 1755, Marqu\u00eas de Pombal ordered the construction of <em>Passeio P\u00fablico<\/em> in the area where nowadays is located the inferior part of <em>Avenida da Liberdade<\/em> and <em>Pra\u00e7a dos Restauradores<\/em>. Initially it was surrounded by walls and gates through which only passed members of the high society. However, in 1821, King D. Jo\u00e3o IV ordered the destruction of the walls so that everyone could freely walk through the <em>Passeio<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The avenue, as we see it today, was built between 1879\/1882 to the style of the <em>Champs Elysees<\/em> in Paris and is nowadays stage for processions, festivities and manifestations, always keeping its elegance, with fountains and amazing terraces above the trees.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It\u00a0connects <em>Pra\u00e7a dos Restauradores<\/em>, South, to <em>Pra\u00e7a do Marqu\u00eas de Pomba<\/em>l, North.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-53.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8181\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-53.jpg\" alt=\"Lisboa2015 - 53\" width=\"540\" height=\"816\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-53.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-53-198x300.jpg 198w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #999999;\">A Ginjinha &#8211;\u00a0one of Lisbon\u2019s classics <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We continue to go down the avenue and finish in the idyllic <em>Pra\u00e7a dos Restauradores<\/em>, praised by its obelisk with 30 m of height, reminding us of the liberation of the country from the Spanish domain in 1640.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-54.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8182 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-54.jpg\" alt=\"Lisboa2015 - 54\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-54.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-54-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><em><span style=\"color: #999999;\">Rossio train station<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Close to this square we have one of the most beautiful areas downtown, <em>Rossio<\/em> or D. Pedro IV Square, with the wonderful <em>Rossio<\/em> Station spreading its charm.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Of course, in the most important areas of the cities was once a hippodrome, during the Roman period (how I love this history details!), and it was also once navigable in the medieval era, due to an affluent of <em>Tejo<\/em>. It was the place of markets and fairs, surrounded by important buildings, but the earthquakes kept destroying everything and the reconstructions built\u00a0what we know today.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This square, once a place for meetings of important names like Bocage, already lived it all, from bullfights, fairs, parties, festivals, beheadings and hangings, military parades, courtesan parties, popular revolutions and a myriad of events.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These days we can see moments of history, like for example the Statue of D. Pedro IV (twenty-eighth King of Portugal and the first Emperor of Brazil) at National Theater <em>D. Afonso Henriques, most likely in this place was located a mosque, it combines different architectural styles, the Romanesque, the Gothic and the Baroque.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Those who know me also know my passion for sacred art, and every time I have the chance to enter a church I do so. In this one I was even lucky enough to have an immediate first degree meeting\u00a0with the famous Joaquim de Almeida!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-33.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8164\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-33.jpg\" alt=\"Lisboa2015 - 33\" width=\"540\" height=\"792\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-33.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-33-204x300.jpg 204w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From here we then started to climb (and climb a lot) to St. George\u2019s Castle.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Its name comes from the devotion of the castle to St. George, patron saint of knights and the crusades, ordered by D. Jo\u00e3o I in the XIV century.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-37m.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8168\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-37m.jpg\" alt=\"Lisboa2015 - 37m\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-37m.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-37m-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But don\u2019t be fooled if you think its medieval aspect is due its perfect state of conservation, because unfortunately that\u2019s not what happened.<br \/>\nOver time, the castle, as well as the several military structures of Lisbon, was remodeled several times, and in the XX century it was in an advanced state of ruin. During the 40\u2019s several works of reconstruction were held, lifting up most part of the walls and heightening the towers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-41.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8172\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-41.jpg\" alt=\"Lisboa2015 - 41\" width=\"540\" height=\"810\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-41.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-41-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a>However it is still monumental that this place is the most high of the hills in the historical center, allowing one of the best views over the city and <em>Tejo<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-45.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8173\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-45.jpg\" alt=\"Lisboa2015 - 45\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-45.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-45-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #999999;\"><em>This terrace has certainly one of the best Sunset views in Lisbon<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And yes, we can imagine stories of kings and queens, of fights and games, wars and triumphs!<br \/>\nThe Castle has paid entrance and costs eight Euros, but it is worth it, having one of the most idyllic scenarios of the sunset in Lisbon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-48.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-8176\" src=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-48-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Lisboa2015 - 48\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-50.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-8178\" src=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-50-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Lisboa2015 - 50\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-38.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-8169\" src=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Lisboa2015-38-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Lisboa2015 - 38\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As much as this weekend was well enjoyed, it was for sure not enough, reason why we must return to Lisbon as soon as possible! Pick it up quite early in the morning, to avoid lines, at <em>Bas\u00edlica da Estrela<\/em>, and live the history and nature of the city through the windows of this picturesque transportation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/lisboa2015-1x.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8216\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/lisboa2015-1x.jpg\" alt=\"lisboa2015-1x\" width=\"540\" height=\"540\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/lisboa2015-1x.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/lisboa2015-1x-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/lisboa2015-1x-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">You can do the whole journey from one end to another, or leave in different stops, enjoying every place in particular.
