There are people who state that nothing can compare to the beauty and kindness of the people from Chiang Mai, here the sense of welcoming is profoundly rooted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Chiang-Mai-3.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6124\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Chiang-Mai-3.jpg\" alt=\"Chiang Mai - 3\" width=\"540\" height=\"810\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Chiang-Mai-3.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Chiang-Mai-3-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a>The old city of Chiang Mai is surrounded by a moat and fortified walls and presents a lively maze of markets, alleys and many beautiful old temples. However it is also important to explore the modern city, which offers us the commodities and services as efficient as the ones from the capital, but in a smaller dimension.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The entire city presents us with the best there is, whether in terms of history, culture or nature. These are older than the ones in Bangkok and in a little bit different style, however equally fascinating.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Just in the old city there are more than 36! This place surrounded by fortified walls is historical and extremely interesting, just walking around its alleys and discovering each corner is enough excitement! As to the temples, go in as much as you can, if you go with little time, here are a few suggestions of the most important ones.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Chiang-Mai-24m.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6143\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Chiang-Mai-24m.jpg\" alt=\"Chiang Mai - 24m\" width=\"540\" height=\"810\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Chiang-Mai-24m.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Chiang-Mai-24m-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><strong><em>Wat Phra Singh<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It was constructed in 1345 by the King Pha Yu, who ordered its construction to keep the ashes of his father, the King Kam Fu. It is thought that it has been the first temple to have the Emerald Buddha, a cultural treasure that now resides at the royal palace in Bangkok.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The temple holds the famous building <em>Phra Viharn Lai Kam<\/em>, of northern style and one of the most famous buildings in the city that keeps in its interior a much venerated statue, the <em>Phra Singh<\/em> Buddha, sculpted in the old style<em> Lana<\/em> and made in copper and gold alloy, originally from Chiang Rai (another interesting northern town).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Chiang-Mai-20.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6140\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Chiang-Mai-20.jpg\" alt=\"Chiang Mai - 20\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Chiang-Mai-20.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Chiang-Mai-20-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><strong><em>Wat Chedi Luang<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The construction of the temple started in the XIV century when King Saen Muag Ma planned to lodge its predecessor ashes in this place. After ten years of construction there was a stop, and it started again a few years later by the order of the widow of Saen Muang Ma. The temple was finished in 1454 by the King Tilokaraj leaving the <em>Chedi<\/em> with a height of 86 m, the biggest <em>Lana<\/em> building from that time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Chiang-Mai-8m.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6129\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Chiang-Mai-8m.jpg\" alt=\"Chiang Mai - 8m\" width=\"540\" height=\"810\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Chiang-Mai-8m.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Chiang-Mai-8m-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a>Partially destroyed in the earthquake of 1545, this<em> Chedi<\/em> is the biggest of Chiang Mai and the place where it is located is of great importance, once it is near the city pillar, deployed next to a tree, which legend says that Chiang Mai will prosper while the tree lives.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Chiang-Mai-52.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6186\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Chiang-Mai-52.jpg\" alt=\"Chiang Mai - 52\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Chiang-Mai-52.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Chiang-Mai-52-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><strong><em>Wat Chiang Man<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Most likely the oldest temple in town. Here you can find several statues of Buddha, being the most important one a small figure in crystal of <em>Phra Setang Khamani<\/em>, which is believed to be gifted with power to make it rain, as well as the <em>Phra Sila<\/em> stone, which came from India.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Chiang-Mai-60.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6173\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Chiang-Mai-60.jpg\" alt=\"Chiang Mai - 60\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Chiang-Mai-60.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Chiang-Mai-60-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><strong><em>Wat Phan Tao<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As I said in the article about Bangkok we had the luck to be in the country while the celebration of the <em>Loy Kathrong<\/em> was happening (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/en\/bangkok\/\">see article<\/a>), and here in Chiang Mai we could also observe the celebration of this festive date.<br \/>\nWe were walking in the old city, coming from <em>Wat Chedi Luang<\/em>, when we stood in front of a small temple with a prevailing wood building, a bit simpler than the temples we had seen before. At the entrance we could read <em>\u201cThe Monastery of a Thousand Kilns\u201d<\/em>, the monastery of the thousand ovens! This inscription is due to the fact of this place being used to the foundry of the Buddha images, destined to <em>Wat Chedi Luang<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Chiang-Mai-45.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6160\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Chiang-Mai-45.jpg\" alt=\"Chiang Mai - 45\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Chiang-Mai-45.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Chiang-Mai-45-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a>This building was constructed firstly as a royal building to the governor Chao Mahawong, who used the structure from 1846 to 1854.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We decided to enter and realized it was a simpler place but also charming, and as we walked into it we noticed something different was happening, lots of people in the place, although being night and the temple\u00a0full of monks preparing it for something. In this case, to the festival we watched in Bangkok, <em>Loy Kathrong<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At <em>Phan Tao<\/em> temple, the Buddhist meditation and the lighting of floating paper lanterns come to life and create one of the most perfect and photogenic moments we\u2019d seen. It is indescribable, the feeling and the beauty of the moment, only watching, but I think that in the pictures you can see its essence. This is Thailand and not just the usual tourism; here we live the tradition, the magic and culture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Chiang-Mai-71.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-6182\" src=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Chiang-Mai-71-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Chiang Mai - 71\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Chiang-Mai-39.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-6156\" src=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Chiang-Mai-39-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Chiang Mai - 39\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Chiang-Mai-31.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-6149\" src=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Chiang-Mai-31-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Chiang Mai - 31\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Leaving the old city and going through the rest of town we\u2019ll also find some must visit places.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em>Wat Suan Dok<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nAlso known as <em>Flower Garden Temple<\/em>, with its <em>Chedi<\/em> in form of a bell, this temple is the royal cemetery of Chiang Mai.<br \/>\nIn terms of architecture it may not be the most fascinating one, but no doubt about its great historic value.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em>Wat Umong<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nVery close to <em>Wat Suan Dok<\/em> is located one of the most ancient monastic temples in Chiang Mai, which has underground places for meditation. Despite a great part of the building being in ruins it is worth a visit, mostly because of the beautiful surrounding forest.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em>Doi Suthep<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nThe amazing mountain from where you can observe the entire city and that keeps one of Chiang Mai\u2019s highlights, the <em>Wat Phrathat<\/em> on the top. But to get here you must climb a staircase of 290 steps or take the funicular, despite being lazy I prefer to take the stairs!<br \/>\nThe temple has an imposing golden <em>Chedi<\/em>, two sanctuaries and cloisters dating from the XVI century. The entire environment is amazing, we look around and see the exuberance of the temple in rivalry with the pure surrounding nature.<br \/>\nLegend has it that <em>Wat Phrathat<\/em>\u2019s place was chosen when the King Ku Na searched for a place to save the sacred relics. So, these were tied to the litter on top of an elephant that was then left wandering alone. The animal climbed <em>Doi Suthep<\/em>, stopped near the top and kneeled, indicating the chosen spot.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Near Doi Suthep, around 4km, we find the<em> Phuping Palace<\/em>, the official residence of the royal family, whose gardens are open to the public. <strong><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Chiang-Mai-28.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6146\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Chiang-Mai-28.jpg\" alt=\"Chiang Mai - 28\" width=\"540\" height=\"810\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Chiang-Mai-28.jpg 540w, https:\/\/flavorsandsenses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Chiang-Mai-28-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a>Leaving the temples aside and taking advantage of the nature and culture the magnificent city of Chiang Mai has to offer, there are mandatory places, like for example the different elephant parks, which unfortunately we weren&#8217;t able to visit. These animals were always very important in Thailand, used as transportation for centuries, and nowadays used in tourism, but from what I read, they\u2019re used with all the necessary respect (I hope so).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Another important thing to mention are the different villages with tribes that keep all the tradition and Thai manners, or the village of the \u00a0\u201c<em>giraffe women<\/em>\u201d refugees, or long neck women. These figure the brutality of the military regime in the neighbor Myanmar and quickly transformed into a tourist attraction in Thailand. Apparently they are used by the Thai authorities, but they assure to be happy in their host country. The use of the necklace is said to be for survival, for being used as protection against animal attacks.
